Google Software Engineer, Manu Cornet just released a new Gmail lab called “Unread Message Icon”. The main purpose of Unread Message Icon lab feature is to find out how many unread email messages in Gmail. The numbers of unread email messages will display right into the Gmail icon itself as below:

Firefox browser:

number of unread email message icon for firefox browser

Chrome browser:

number of unread email message icon for chrome browser

Basic requirement of browser:

-Chrome browser must be at least version 6 and above

-Firefox browser must be at least version 2 and above

-Internet Explorer is not supported by this feature

How to Enable Unread Message Icon

Go to Gmail Labs tab in settings, search Unread Message Icon lab and switch to Enable radio button.  Click Save Changes button to activate the lab.

enable gmail unread message icon

My Opinion:

I found that Unread Message Icon feature is useful especially when you are opening too many tabs. You can still see the number of unread email message easily without switching to Gmail tab. However, it does not support Internet explorer browser at the moment. Otherwise, it will be a perfect feature for Gmail users.
