Last month, one of my ex-colleague died of colon cancer. He was diagnosed with colon cancer only a few months before sick unto death. Even he had gone through some colon cancer treatment but still the cancer cells were splitting through the whole body. When I received the news, I can’t believe it initially but I believe he had tried his best to fight against the silent killer – cancer.
A healthy lifestyle and early detection will help in preventing cancer. In order to reduce the risk of chronic diseases especially cancer, we must make the necessarly lifestyle and behavioural changes. For example:
- Quitting smoking
- Being active and exercising regularly
- Increasing daily intake of fruits and vegetables
- Reduce high-fat foods
- Good awareness on cancer so the cancer can be detected in early stage and treated successfully
In my country – Malaysia, cancer is the third largest cause of death and the majority of cancer admissions in hospitals were colorectal cancer, female breast cancer, lung cancer and leukemia. Actually, 40 percent of the cancer cases were preventable if individuals undergo preventive health screenings for early detection purposes. Not only that, everyone must understand the value of nutrition so that we can plan our diet better and gain overall positive health, thus preventing cancer.
I guess the cancer awareness campaign is a good way to wake-up everyone to begin checking our lifestyle. Let’s hope that everyone include you and me will take the necessary steps to help reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic illnesses.
