H.Ed Robert was died on 1 April, 2010 at the age of 68 due to pneumonia. Henry Edward Roberts was called “Father of Computing” or “PC Pioneer ” by Bill Gates – Microsoft Founder. Many people may not knowing him if compares to Bill Gates but he was the inventor of Altair 8800 Computer in the mid of 1970s.
Ed Robert founded the Society MITS (Micro Instrumentation Telemetry Systems) in Albuquerque and sold MITS in 1977 to become a general practitioner in Georgia. The Altair 8800 was the first personal computer which could be programmed to do many tasks. The interesting connection between Dr. Henry Edwared Roberts and Bill Gates was Dr.H did not continue his journey in computing field but moved back to Georgia and became a doctor after that, while Bill Gates was continuing his ambitions and history proved that Bill Gates’s success in computing field. However, as mentioned by Bill Gates and Paul G.Allen (co-founder of Microsoft) in a joint statement, both of them were saddened by the death of “our friend and early mentor”
Without Dr.Ed Roberts, Bill Gates and Paul Allen may not had chance to install Basic programming language that could run on Altair 8800 computer and Microsoft Corp may not appear in this world which brings billions of wealth to Bill Gates and his partner, Paul Allen. Their first programming software – Altair Basic (Beginners All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) worked on Altair 8800 computer was the beginning of Microsoft – the world largest software company.
A lot of people have credited Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, Apple and IBM as the pioneers of Personal Computer but H.Edward Roberts, the Altair 8800 designer, deserves to be the creator of personal computer because it was created before Apple 1 or IBM PC (IBM PC was introduced in 1981 as officially corporate endorsement of PCs.) We should remember his contributions on personal computers and how his invention had make modern people’s life easier and wonderful. Thank you Dr.Henry Edward Roberts and may your soul rest in peace.
